Summary
In this three-videotape series, America's top coaches introduce the fundamental skills and techniques used in each track and field event. Produced in conjunction with The Athletics Congress (now U.S. Track and Field), the Coaching by the Experts series covers running events, jumping events, and throwing events on separate videotapes.
With the help of slow-motion and stop-action photography, all three videos
- show athletes how to perform the specific skills and use the correct technique for each event,
- point out common mistakes in each event, and
- provide drills to correct these mistakes.
With former Olympic coaches Leroy Walker, Larry Ellis, Stan Huntsman, and Terry Crawford serving as instructors, this 48-minute video presents teaching segments on sprints, hurdles, relays, middle distances, and long distances.
The video begins by demonstrating the essential elements of good sprinting form and starting technique. Next, in the hurdles segment, viewers learn proper technique for the 100-meter men's hurdles, the 100-meter women's hurdles, and the intermediate hurdles. The relay segment teaches proper baton exchanges, demonstrating how to pass the stick in both the 400-meter and 1600-meter relay. Finally, the video shows middle and long distance runners how to improve their running mechanics. The video illustrates how to eliminate lateral movement and other sources of wasted energy, and it explains basic race strategies.
