Choice Review
The fields of occupational safety and health have grown and undergone considerable scrutiny and legislation since the third edition of this set (1983). Stellman, assisted by thousands of consultants and editors, has ambitiously addressed a wide range of topics, divided into four main headings and 17 additional categories. Volume 1 includes the body, health care, management and policy, tools and approaches; volume 2, hazards; volume 3, chemical, industries and occupations (chemical, manufacturing, textiles, transport, construction, and services-trades); and volume 4, guides and indexes. Topics of emerging interest are addressed, such as sexual harassment, workplace safety, blood-born pathogens, and China's policies toward workers. The strength of this set is its broad coverage of many aspects of worker safety. Fields are recognized as multidisciplinary and interrelated; prevention and health promotion are given due space; policy, management, and prevention are well covered. However, problems found in the 1983 edition remain. Indexing continues to be uneven: the index entry for "Benzene" does not refer to sections 104.273 and 104.274, which deal with this chemical; materials for "Carpal tunnel syndrome" are entered under "Repetitive motion"; "Labour" is used instead of "Labor," "Forestry" instead of "Logging," "Printing" instead of "Ink." "NAFTA" is not cited, but there are two brief references under "North American Free Trade Agreement." The indexes at the beginning of each volume cover that volume only; the index for all volumes appears at the end of volume 4. All indexes list section numbers but not volume numbers. The spines do not list inclusive section numbers. There continues to be a dearth of cross-references. The "Guide to Chemicals" (volume 3) is divided into several dozen sections. Web sites and e-mail addresses are omitted, although addresses, phones, and fax numbers are given for many agencies worldwide. A section on laws, arranged by country, would be very helpful. Libraries that serve students of workplace safety and related fields of law, engineering, and government may want to consider acquiring this unique and comprehensive set. P.
