Controversies in Post Keynesian Economics proves that it is possible to meet the most exacting scholarly standards while also managing to make economics enjoyable to read.
Professor Davidson provides a lucid review of the debates between neoclassical Keynesians, monetarists and post Keynesians. These debates have been rekindled as a result of the revitalisation of the post Keynesian tradition coupled with the failure of the monetarist approach to explain economic developments in the 1980s. He develops this history of the struggle for the minds of economists, as well as explaining in intelligible language, the different roles assigned to money, contracts and the uncertainty of the inflationary process. In conclusion, he discusses which of these theories is likely to be most relevant to the economic problems that will be facing the free world in the 21st century.

Choice Review
Davidson (University of Tennessee) sets out to attempt to "review and analyze, from a 1990s perspective, the debates among. . .the monetarists, the (neoclassical) Keynesians and the Post Keynesians." Although the discussion ranges over the full 55 years since the publication of Keynes's General Theory, the emphasis is on the period since 1960 when, after more than two decades of general agreement about what Keynes meant, the first and third schools became serious alternatives in the literature. As one might expect, the review is somewhat one-sided and the text is well populated with straw men of various vintages. The review is also rather weak on matters of both doctrinal and economic history. In short, it is best regarded as either a comfort to the faithful or a capsule statement of Davidson's often-repeated views. Useful supplementary reading for upper-level undergraduates.-D. E. Moggridge, University of Toronto
