Frend's book is an outstanding achievement in tracing the history of archaeological research that pertains to early Christianity. The author begins with an account of early travelers' observations and their identifications of early Christian monuments, followed by an excellent review of the importance to archaeology of the Napoleonic invasion of Egypt. Frend then turns to his own specialty and provides an unparalleled review of the history of 19th-and early-20th-century archaeological research in North Africa, particularly Algeria, that pertains to early Christianity. A single chapter reviews, in almost outline form, the explorations of Christian remains in Asia Minor, Central Asia, the Balkans, and Western Europe. In an attempt at a comprehensive treatment of the topic, Frend details the great discoveries of the 1940s to 1960s, as well as the efforts of conservation and preservation at the end of WW II and later at sites such as Carthage and Nubia. Useful index, numerous drawings, maps and photos, and a select bibliography.
