This excellent introduction to computer data networking is written for senior-level undergraduate or graduate students seeking a basic, conceptual understanding of modern data networking. Comer provides a broad overview of many interrelated topics, defines this field's specialized jargon, and stresses principles over technological details. The first of four sections addresses how data are transmitted over various media and the equipment used for doing this. The second focuses on packet transmission; topics include packet structure, protocols, local and wide area networking, routers and bridges, and performance. The third presents the many elements of internetworking with emphasis on network architecture, and the key current and emerging Internet protocols. The last section discusses network applications, including the client-server model, electronic mail, Web topics, and network management and security. Each chapter features an introduction explaining its purpose, helpful figures and examples, a summary, and a set of exercises. An appendix listing an extensive set of networking terms and abbreviations is a valuable feature, as is the included CD-ROM, useful for both students and instructors. This book is similar in style, level, and content coverage to Data Network Handbook: An Interactive Guide to Network Architecture and Operations, by Kenneth Reed (CH, Mar'97).
