Fossil fuels are a finite resource, and their continued use as the world's dominant energy supply is damaging the environment. Future use of alternative methods of energy supply is inescapable, and this book explores the historical origins, technical features, marketability, and environmental impacts of the complete range of sustainable energy technologies: solar, biomass, wind, hydropower, geothermal power, ocean-energy sources, solar-derived hydrogen fuel, and energy storage. The aim is to inform policy analysts and decision makers of the options available for sustainable energy production. The book is therefore written so as to be accessible to an audience from a broad range of backgrounds and scientific training. It will also be a valuable supplementary text for advanced courses in environmental studies, energy economics and policy, and engineering.

Choice Review

Cassedy (Polytechnic Univ., Brooklyn, NY) ambitiously explains the very complex problems that society faces in trying to wean itself from fossil fuels. Each of the several alternatives--solar, biomass, wind, hydro, geothermal, ocean energy, and nuclear fusion--are discussed in detail and found wanting. Nuclear fission is excluded because Cassedy feels that the poisonous waste problems are insurmountable. Although all except fusion are technically possible, none except wind can compete in the short or even medium term with fossil fuels on an economic basis. Enthusiasts for all of these technologies are aware of this but eagerly cite "breakthroughs" that are coming to change the equation in the future. The author is in a unique position to refute these claims as he is an active researcher in this field and is not easily dismissed. The book includes a wealth of bibliographic sources following each chapter, plus many illustrations. A bonus is the chapter on research and development that shows how a scientific approach really proceeds, given the constraints of funding, bureaucratic oversight, and the bias of the researchers and their sponsors.
