Contributions by over eighty professionals provide an overview of the subject that includes statistics, numerical computations, theory of computation, hardware systems, artificial intelligence, programming languages, operating systems, database management systems, software methodology, and applications. Chapters define current research areas and provide some limited projections of future developments. The editor, Bruce W. Arden is chairman of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department at Princeton University, and the contributors include many of the leading names in computer science and engineering research. The book is the result of a six-year study, funded by the National Science Foundation.
