"Aerobic Fitness and Health ends the need for difficult and time-consuming searches for information on aerobic fitness by presenting a synthesis of current knowledge in a single source." "Written by Roy J. Shephard, one of the world's leading authorities on exercise science, this book provides a comprehensive review of the widely scattered scientific literature on aerobic fitness. The book covers a broad range of issues that focus on the interactions between physical activity, aerobic fitness, and health." "This concise and very readable reference offers new insights about the physiological determinants of aerobic fitness; examines the status of current fitness levels among children, adults, and the elderly and discusses the pros and cons of the different population studies used to assess these levels; takes an in-depth look at the opposing view - nature vs. nurture - on the source of aerobic fitness; and identifies the many important health dividends of aerobic fitness and regular physical exercise." "Each idea advanced in Aerobic Fitness and Health is thoroughly covered and rigorously documented to show a broad base of scientific support. Over 1,300 references make the book an excellent resource for those who want to investigate specific areas of aerobic research."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Shephard, well qualified in the area of exercise and health, has published numerous articles and many books in the broad sports-medicine spectrum, and is currently president of the American College of Sports Medicine and the Canadian Association of Sports Science. He directs his writing toward health and fitness professionals rather than weekend athletes. The documentation is exceptional, providing additional sources of information for further in-depth study of the issues covered. He also provides up-to-date scientific evidence concerning the health benefits of regular moderate intensity exercise for the general sedentary population. Many tables, figures, and formulas are used throughout the book. Shephard discusses health-related fitness and the present state of fitness in terms of type of testing, subject selection, and trends. He discusses the effects of inherited traits versus training in aerobic fitness for a variety of athletes and training for the average person, and reviews the pros and cons of exercise and health enhancement.
