The twenty chapters in this book show both sides of the interaction between logic and language: how logical systems are designed and modified in response to linguistic needs, and how mathematical theory arises out of this process and affects subsequent linguistic theory.

The combined study of logic and language goes back at least as far as the Middle Ages. In the last twenty-five years it has gained momentum with the formulation of Montague semantics and Generative Syntax, and the subsequent diversification of research programs. The Handbook of Logic and Language is the first comprehensive survey of the field. The twenty chapters show both sides of the interaction between logic and language: how logical systems are designed and modified in response to linguistic needs, and how mathematical theory arises out of this process and affects subsequent linguistic theory.

Though the fields of (natural language) linguistics and (mathematical) logic possess their own characteristic methods and goals, they also share a substantial range of concerns. As such, a need arises for students and practitioners of each discipline to learn something of the other. J. McCawley's notable Everything That Linguists Have Always Wanted to Know about Logic but Were Ashamed to Ask (1981; 2nd. ed., 1993) addresses the needs of linguists in this regard in a gentle way; readers coming from a logic background and desiring some exposure to linguistics can also read it with profit. The present volume covers similar ground and much more, all in exquisite detail, and perhaps not quite so gently. As a compendium of 20 review articles, the prerequisites from linguistics, logic, and philosophy vary with the contributions, but they generally make a significantly deeper penetration into logic than McCawley's book. The first six entries set forth the basic schools of thought on the interaction of language and learning, most notably Montague grammar, government-binding theory, and the more recent situation theory; the next eight articles discuss themes that cross the boundaries of these various schools, especially various logical methods: feature logics, types, proof theory, and formal learning theory. Six final articles discuss specific linguistic phenomena that have inspired developments in logic, such as temporality, presupposition, and collectivity. Indispensable.
