Mathematical statistics typically represents one of the most difficult challenges in statistics, particularly for those with more applied, rather than mathematical, interests and backgrounds. This interesting and very useful book carefully blends theoretical developments in statistics with applications in areas such as medicine, economics, astronomy, computer science, and communications. Kapadia and colleagues (all, Univ. of Texas) provide necessary knowledge and technical expertise for learning scholastic processes, decision theory, multivariate analysis, and computational statistics. Chapter 1 presents the fundamental concepts in advanced calculus and finite mathematics that are needed to develop basic concepts in mathematical statistics. Remaining chapters treat various aspects of mathematical statistics; basic concepts of probability theory, including Bayes' Theorem; discrete (as well as continuous) random variables and some of their standard distributions; relationships among these distributions and their properties; order statistics and their distributions; asymptotic distribution theory; various modes of convergence; problems of obtaining "good" point estimators of parameters; the concepts of sufficient statistics; complete family of distributions; different kinds of point estimators; various well-known results used to find uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimators (UMVUE); hypothesis testing; likelihood ratio tests; Neyman-Pearson lemma; uniformly most powerful tests; one- and two-sample tests; distribution-free tests; interval estimation; and computational methods.
