Choice Review

This book is similar to Bejan's other recent book, Entropy Generation Minimization (CH, Mar'96), in that traditional engineering systems are approached in a rather nontraditional manner. The book is concerned primarily with the design aspects of engineering systems involving heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and economics. A departure from tradition is that the authors consider the "exergy" balance, as opposed to the total energy balance, as a basic principle for analysis of these systems. They also describe irreversibilities of the systems in terms of the second law of thermodynamics, or entropy generation, instead of the more traditional description in terms of friction loss (e.g., energy dissipation) or inefficiency. The principles are illustrated by application to a variety of specific cases throughout the book, and a unique feature is a case study of a cogeneration system that is carried throughout the book. The presentation is quantitative and professionally done, with numerous equations, plots, tables, etc., and each chapter includes a liberal list of references and problems.
