The struggle to create, sustain, and entrench democratic political systems is one of the central narratives of modernity. In 1760, democracy did not exist in any currently recognizable form. By 1995, however, there were democratic states on every continent and in every region.

This invaluable and engaging resource comprehensively surveys and explores the democratization of the world. The introduction elaborates on the key explanatory models of democratization, refining the description of a regime's democratic status and exploring the models and strategies of comparative analysis used in the book. Areas of discussion in the subsequent chapters include: the French and American revolutions, the experiences of Latin America and Asia, the relative weakness of democratization in Africa and the Middle East, and the democratic revolutions of 1989 and their aftermath in Eastern Europe and Russia.
