Choice Review

Although it is predominantly about Gardner's often-controversial theories and the indelible impact they have had on psychology, this excellent addition to Open Court's series also explores the different ways of thinking about intelligence, cognition, and thought. The book is intended to call Gardner's approach to intelligence into question, and Gardner's individualized responses to critiques provide a powerful method of exploring contemporary theory and research on intelligence. In addition, this approach serves as an excellent model for students embarked on the scientific enterprise, entailing as it does the mutual exchange of ideas and scholarly disagreements. This is a valuable resource for anyone interested in theory and research on intelligence, thought, and/or cognition. Gardner's description of his own approach to his career and the motivations that have driven him will enlighten anyone interested in pursuing an academic career and serve as a solid reminder of the power and responsibility that come with that territory.
