Abstract:
"The more Classical Archaeology focuses on settlement processes of rural areas the more obvious becomes the lack of reliable chronologies for household pottery, particularly since these wares predominate all others with regard to quantity and stratified contexts are rarely available. The material basis for this study are find complexes from Didyma, Ephesos, Miletus, Phocaea, Troy, the peninsula of Miletus and the recent Mycale survey. It includes more than 2,500 pans, saucepans, cooking pots, amphorae, and bowls, which are classified according to typology in order to establish a relative chronology which is then dated absolutely. 590 representative pieces were selected and included in the catalogue because of their particular shape relevant for typological development and because of quantitative distribution. Important dating find complexes come from ship wrecks as well as closely dated and stratified settlement contexts, e. g. at Knossos, the Athenian Agora, and in Arab destruction horizons of North Africa, such as in Berenice and Carthage. 2,000 surface finds from the surrounding area of Miletus were analysed by seriation and chronologically included in the study."--Publisher's website.
